Kyösti Tarvainen was born in Helsinki. He earned M.Sc. in technical physics, the Helsinki Technical University (Aalto University), 1974, and Ph.D. in systems engineering, Case Western Reserve University, USA, 1981. He has been a researcher of multi-objective optimisation at the Academy of Finland and is a co-author of a book on hierarchical multi-objective optimisation. He has worked in industrial mathematics at Rolf Nevanlinna Institute, Helsinki University, and he has taught mathematics at the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki. He has taught mathematical modelling as an Associate Professor (Docent) at the Helsinki Technical University and the University of Helsinki. His main interest has been mathematical modelling, optimisation and simulation.
